Beautiful Food Photography – Technical Things You Need to Have

You certainly don’t need to buy the most expensive technologies to produce good photos, but each genre requires specific tools. If you want to produce beautiful food photography and start a career as a food photographer, then it’s a good idea to invest in certain gear, like the following:

Macro len

Ever wonder how those stunning detail shots are produced? You need a lens with true macro capability to get in close to your subject. Sadly, most conventional lenses don’t cut it; their minimum focusing distance isn’t good enough for the job. With a reliable macro lens, you can stay close to the subject and make full use of even a small shooting space.

Reflector

Almost all photography genres require a versatile 5-in-1 reflector, and food photography is certainly no exception. It allows you to reflect, diffuse, and subtract light so you can compose the image as you wish. Reflectors come in all shapes, sizes, and price points, so it’s easy to find something that fits your needs.

Tripod with lateral arm

Precision and stability are key to producing beautiful food photography. The higher the sensors and pixel count you’re working with, the more you need a tripod to avoid blurry images.

Lighting

There’s a wide range of choices online when it comes to artificial lighting. If budget is an issue, don’t worry—there are affordable soft box kits available. They’re not top of the line, of course, but they’re good enough. You can always upgrade later on.

Scrim fabric

It’s not every day that you will have good sunlight to work within your shooting area, so you want to be able to control and soften the light from your window with diffusion. And should you need to use artificial lighting, you can use this, too. Scrim fabrics can soften any light source.
